Department of rehabilitation

The Rehabilitation Department is responsible for providing services and support to patients throughout their entire journey in specialist healthcare, from early rehabilitation following an acute admission to specialized rehabilitation for chronic conditions.

Central to the treatment is a holistic approach that considers the whole person. This involves addressing the physical, mental, and social aspects of rehabilitation on an individual basis throughout the process. The department works in an interdisciplinary manner to meet the patient's rehabilitation needs.

Early Rehabilitation

The department offers services in occupational therapy, physiotherapy, clinical nutrition, speech therapy, and social work. We support fourteen of the hospital's twenty departments, serving both inpatients and outpatients, as well as patients living at home through ambulatory teams and/or digital tools. Additionally, we provide a comprehensive training program for patients and their families through the department’s Learning and Coping Centre.

Specialized Rehabilitation

We offer specialized rehabilitation for individuals with spinal cord injuries and acquired brain damage. Our multidisciplinary outpatient clinic focuses on back, neck, and shoulder rehabilitation, and also holds regional responsibility for diagnosing Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS).

The department collaborates on the operation of the National Competence Service for Exercise as Medicine, in partnership with the Department of Cardiac Medicine, the Department of Thoracic Surgery, the Department of Pulmonary and Occupational Medicine, the Department of Surgery, the Department of Circulation and Imaging, and CERG, NTNU.

Research

The department strives to base its clinical activities on evidence-based medicine and knowledge-driven practice. As a university department, research and development (R&D) are integral to our work. Ongoing research includes projects, doctoral research, and master’s theses.

Head of department:
