HEARTHEALTH ID
The overall goal of this pilot project is to put heart health for people with intellectual disabilities on the agenda by providing new knowledge about metabolic health and physical activity levels, as well as gaining better insight into existing barriers to assessment and treatment for people with intellectual disabilities.
Background
Despite the frequent presence of risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and inactivity in people with intellectual disabilities, both Norwegian and international studies indicate that people with intellectual disabilities are less likely than the general population to receive medical treatment and preventive measures and medication for cardiovascular disease.
Objectives
In this project we will a) examine metabolic heart health and physical activity levels in a random sample of people with intellectual disabilities and compare the results with the general population, and b) conduct an interview study to gain insights into barriers that exist for the prevention, assessment, and treatment of cardiovascular disorders in this group.
Impact
Through the project, we will gain increased insight into metabolic health and physical activity levels in people with intellectual disabilities as well as barriers to assessing health and care services.
